Motorola Solutions Marks 93 Years in Communications

Since 1928, Motorola Solutions has revolutionized communications. And this September marks the company’s 93rd anniversary — a milestone backed by a legacy of innovation and commitment to reimagine safety and security moving forward.

Motorola Solutions has a rich history of firsts – from pioneering mobile communications, creating the technology that carried the first words from the moon and enhancing public safety communications with APX NEXT. Most recently, they’ve created public safety’s first ever cloud-native software suite, CommandCentral, which streamlines and automates the workflow from 911 call through to case closure.

And as COVID-19 changed lives and businesses in unforeseen ways, Motorola Solutions drew upon their legacy of innovation to continue developing and delivering the solutions their customers needed – even as those needs evolved – and they did it all while also keeping a focus on the safety of their employees.

The company immediately established a “work from home if you can” approach for their more than 18,000 employees in 60 countries. They protected essential workers who needed to work on-site or in the field with additional precautions, including face masks, sanitization products and thermal scanning before entering Motorola Solutions facilities. They also prioritized employee wellness from the get-go – implementing measures to help alleviate concerns about the pandemic, growing social isolation and difficulties balancing work with family, including company-wide paid time off days, virtual team events, well-being workshops and more.

As a result, Motorola Solutions was able to continue living up to their purpose – the driving force that unifies all of their employees: helping people be their best in the moments that matter. Despite the challenges of everyday life in a pandemic, employees across the company never lost sight of helping their hero customers on the front lines – medical workers and first responders. They continued to deliver essential mission-critical solutions and services while also innovating new solutions to help keep communities safe.

Even from the earliest phases of the pandemic, Motorola Solutions started innovating to help frontline workers. They developed a new mobile application to help health care workers register patients, record status of a health check and assist with monitoring individuals testing positive for COVID-19. They developed Thermal Elevated Temperature Detection screening to help detect indications of elevated body temperature to keep both employees and customers safe in workplaces. They also delivered remote 911 capabilities, making it possible for 911 call takers to work from home and continue delivering their essential services to our communities.

Solutions like these make it clear that the Motorola Solutions of today is a far cry from their walkie-talkie roots – but this transformation didn’t happen overnight.

Since 2015, Motorola Solutions has invested more than $4.5B in strategic acquisitions to build the world’s most complete technology ecosystem for public safety and enterprise security. Today, their technologies include video security and access control, command center software as well as their trusted portfolios of mission-critical communications – solutions that are fully integrated to enable their customers to collaborate in more powerful ways than ever before.

Motorola Solutions’ rich history of innovation is both its legacy and its future – and it’s what enabled the company to not just survive the pandemic, but come out stronger. Today, Motorola Solutions is a global leader in public safety and enterprise security, and their determination to deliver the promise of a safer world has never been more apparent.
